Let's Talk About Sight Words

Sight words can be hard to learn and the drill and kill with flashcards doesn't help.  But I have some suggestions.  Make a game of it, you don't have to buy anything off teacherspayteachers!  If your child likes drawing have them write their sight words in a fancy way with different colors.  There is also the "magic" trick.  Where they write the word in crayon, then color over it in marker.  They think that's amazing!  Spell the words with playdoh  Not only are they practicing their words, they are also getting fine motor practice.  If your child like games, write them. on index cards and play go fish, you can use the cards and play war with them as well.  Also with the index cards you can play memory with them or lay them out face up, you say a word and they have to find it.  For sensory print out a rainbow piece of paper and put it in a shallow tray and put salt on top of it.  have them spell it in the salt.  (this activity was one of my nephews favorite)!  There is also a sight called havefunteaching.com where they have songs to go with the words.  You can either pay an subsection fee or you can use your good friend YouTube and look up the words your child is working on.  You might not get the elaborate version but your child can still watch the song and video.

But when doing sight words with your child, DO NOT add in a BUNCH of new words.  Have a stack of cards they know and just mix in a few new words.  If you give them a BUNCH of new words all at once, it will just cause frustration.  Which is NO fun for anyone!
